Profile Overview

Yota was Russia’s first provider of high-speed wireless internet based on 802.16e-2005 mobile WiMAX technology. The company was incorporated in May 2007. In September 2007 it started WiMAX trials in Moscow. In October 2007, the company signed a commercial contract with Samsung, in which Samsung became the main provider of Mobile WiMAX base stations and CPEs for Moscow and St. Petersburg regions. The contract included 1,600 base stations (4,800 sectors) to be deployed during the completion of the network. 

Yota has a nationwide license in the 2.5GHz band. They acquired these licenses through the acquisition of 7 companies in Russia that had the spectrum. They have between 30-40MHz of spectrum in some cities.  License duration varies across the regions. Yota is owned by WIMAX Holding Ltd which also owns Scartel Star Lab (the mobile services R&D center) and More (The Media content aggregator). The network deployment is funded by Telconet Capital Limited Partnership, which has invested $300m in the project. 

After more than 2 years of trials, Yota announced its mobile WiMAX network commercial launch on June 2009. By October 2009 the company had reached 200,000 active subscribers, including customers that bought into the service during its test phase, in December 2009 Yota announced its 350,000 subscribers mark, and more recently in March 2010 they announced 450,000 mobile WiMAX subscribers. The company has launched its services in Moscow and St Petersburg only. The average traffic per customer is equivalent to 10.3GB, reportedly the same as most fixed line broadband customers in Moscow.  

As of Q1 2010 its network covered  more than 23 Million people.  In the past Yota together with its partner Samsung, commenced testing of the the next version of mobile WiMAX technology: Release 2.0 (IEEE 802.16m standard). The firm had announced its plans for deploying the 802.16m standard by the end of 2010, however in Q2 2010, the company announced that they would shift from WiMAX to FDD-LTE as their next 4G evolution path. Yota plans to spend $100 million on the rollout of LTE networks in five Russian cities this year. Total investments are estimated at up to $2 billion. 

Yota had planned to launch WiMax in 15 more Russian cities, which will instead receive LTE service. The company will use the same 2.5-2.7 GHz frequency band in which its WiMax networks currently operate. Yota has signed contracts for delivery of LTE 1,000 base stations but declined to say who the equipment makers were. The company currently operates in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Sochi and Krasnodar. It is also active in Belarus, Peru and Nicaragua. In July 9th, Yota received approval from the Russian regulator to use its 2.5GHz spectrum for LTE deployment. The regulator had previously said that the frequencies allocated to WiMAX could not be used for other technologies. 


In Peru, Yota was awarded a 2.5GHz spectrum license in January 2010 to operate telephony and internet services throughout the country. The 2668MHz-2692MHz band will be used to provide WiMAX services in the provinces of Lima, Callao and Trujillo, while the 2668MHz-2690MHz band will be used for the rest of the country. Yota was the only prequalified company in the process and presented an offer of USD3.9 million.  MTC and Yota signed the formal contract on 20 January. The concession was originally awarded in August 2009. Under the contract, Yota is expected to deploy 9,000 internet connections during the first year of operations and 60,000 by the fifth year of the concession. The company said it estimates that total investment during the first five years of concession will reach USD100 million. Yota also owns spectrum in Belarus and Nicaragua (60 MHz and between 40 and 60 MHz, respectively).  Nicaragua's service launch took place in December 2009, just 3 months after the beginning of the deployment.
